Everyone must have once came across this thought, that how does Google know everything.
Like, damn you choose any word from a dictionary, or type lyrics from anywhere in a song, Google just gets you whatever you want.
And you’re like, voilaaa!!! Miraculous!!!
Ever wondered how it all works, and how so many so many businesses are totally dependent upon Google?
Well, here I’m going to explain in simple terms so that whoever reads this, gets a basic idea of the foundation of Google.
Google is just another search engine that leads the global markets of search. And anyone who is searching something on Google is a Google’s customer.
But what is a Search Engine, and how does it operate? This is where the mystery of magical Google is resolved.
See, Google doesn’t own all the content it displays on its search results. But all of those contents are present somewhere in the websites that exist in the directory of Google.
When you type something on the search bar of Google, it displays billions of results from billions of websites which are exactly what you wanted to see.
Imagine a library where all the websites are indexed on Google, in one way or another.
Now, when you search anything on Google, the search term is considered as a keyword by the search engine.
Then, Google scans all the websites in its library, and matches the keyword you searched with content on the websites present in Google’s directory. You can see the matched keyword in bold, on the first website found on Google.
This process is called Crawling and is done by the Crawler of the Search Engine. Crawlers can also be known as Spiders or Bots. Google’s crawler is named as Google Bot. Following are the names of crawlers of other major search Engines.
Yahoo – Slurp
Bing – Bing Bot
Yandex – Yandex Bot
Baidu – Baidu Spider
So, how does Google know which websites will have the most relevant information from the keywords you have searched?
This is where Google takes responsibility, since it is the leading search engine, and it ensures the quality of search results that its users deserve. Google constantly works upon improvising the experience of search by keeping up with technologies such as Artificial Intelligence etc.
There are more than 200 factors that decide the position of a website on the Search Engine Result Page (SERP) that appears when you hit the search button. Following are the major ranking factors that increase the authority of a website to position well on the SERP.
- Relevance and uniqueness of information on the website as per the keywords searched.
- How old the website is and how well it is linked (endorsed) by other high authority websites.
- Is it mobile friendly or not?
- How fast it loads on your browser.
- Presence of rich content such as Images and Videos.
- How secure is the overall website.
- In case you’re advertising, the amount you are paying Google in order to be displayed for a particular set of keywords.
Yes, you either pay Google (via. Adwords) to obtain the first spot that is always reserved for advertisers. Or the website’s authority must be deserving of those free organic spots, right below the ads. I have written more about this in detail. But you can never imagine the earnings of Google by just selling those spots for every keyword that exists. This makes Google a very powerful tool indeed.
Small scale to Large scale businesses invest huge amounts to rank well on Google, in order to reach their potential customers. This has become the most important requirement for any business to survive in a digital world.
All in all, Google has helped almost every individual in one way or more. It is being loved by researchers, publishers and businessmen to grow and sustain on the internet.
